Developed by psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, this cognitive bias explains why we often rely on stereotypes and surface-level similarities rather than statistical evidence when making decisions.
This heuristic operates by comparing new information to stored mental templates. When evaluating whether someone belongs to a particular group or category, we assess how well they match our prototype of that group. For example, when meeting someone at Stanford University's engineering department, we might assume they're brilliant at mathematics simply because they fit our stereotype of a "typical engineer."
The process involves three key components: the target (what we're judging), the category (our mental prototype), and the degree of similarity between them. The more closely the target resembles our prototype, the more likely we are to place them in that category, regardless of actual probability or base rates.
In American healthcare, the representativeness heuristic can lead to diagnostic errors. Emergency room physicians at hospitals like Mayo Clinic or Johns Hopkins might misdiagnose heart attacks in women because female patients often don't present with the "classic" chest-clutching symptoms that match the typical heart attack prototype. Women frequently experience subtler symptoms like nausea or back pain, leading to delayed treatment.
In academic settings, this bias affects college admissions and scholarship decisions. An admissions officer at Harvard might favor an applicant from a prestigious prep school who writes eloquently about classical literature, even if another candidate from a public school demonstrates superior analytical skills through unconventional examples.
Students preparing for AP Psychology, SAT reasoning sections, or MCAT behavioral sciences should understand how representativeness heuristic appears in test scenarios. Exam questions often present scenarios where statistical information conflicts with stereotype-based judgments. For instance, a classic problem might describe a shy, poetry-loving individual and ask whether they're more likely to be a librarian or farmer, ignoring the base rate that farmers vastly outnumber librarians in the population.
